The Rhythm of a Queen - The story of DJ Dibou and Black Soul Rhythms

Hey ya’ll, this weeks blog is dedicated to the Founder and Queen of Black Soul Rhythms –Marjorie Fort-Dees a.k.a. DJ Dibou…YAY! We get to have an inside peep of the leader behind the phenomenal 5-star Online Radio Station http://www.blacksoulrhythms.com/ in her very own words:

The history regarding the BSR enterprise and its evolution started back in RL college...I was a DJ in training on college radio and I said to myself ....."Self...this would be a cool business to own in the future!!" Although I received my FCC license to operate a radio station, I had to put DJing on the backburner to concentrate on my school work. FAST FORWARD 20 YEARS... I found traditional radio would be a major financial investment that I wasn’t willing to risk ...I like being able to pay the bills and take a vacation once a year. But there was a buzzz about internet radio I was hearing around the internet.

“In 2006 I entered SL (Secondlife, the virtual world) and found all the music events concerts clubs & DJs I knew I could and would have to establish my own internet radio station. Thus, I began the station originally named Black Beats Radio. But when I submitted the name for trademark, my application was denied because the name was too similar to Black Beats Magazine. I would have had a chance in dispute it if Black Beats Magazine wasn’t also focused on music & headquartered in New York just like me. So.... instead of becoming discouraged I held "name the station" & "radio logo" contests in SL . The winners of that contest were:

GRAND PRIZE WINNER = Japonica Shilova
2nd Place = fallon Maertens
3rd Place = CosmoPecan Kawabata


The residents of SL submitted some great names too ....but they were either already used or too close to an existing RL organization so I combined two contestant entries to come up with BLACK SOUL RHYTHMS Internet Radio!! The logo choice was difficult too...but I chose the entry from my SL sister Midnight Gregory. I must give credit to everyone that has supported me .... BSR Radio would be nothing without all the DJs and hostesses that work hard to make BSR Radio unique. A few have been with me since the beginning and are now on staff as Program Directors focused on various music genres...planning events and submitting music to be added to the daily rotation. “

Wow yall, isn’t this just simply amazing, in addition to DJ Dibou running http://www.blacksoulrhythms.com/ she also has her own Island in SL called SugarHill. SugarHill to me, is a very relaxed environment filled with all kinds of things to do….there is an outdoor stage, The City Bar, The Underground, Nocturnal Souls, Nappy roots Juke Joint, A Beach, A Yacht, Stores, an art gallery, mall area, living spaces and a million other things to do…to me it is not only a comfortable place to party but very serene, romantic beautiful place to walk around and explore PLUS it has a very original down home feel to it…here is DJ Dibou’s thoughts about SugarHill in relation to Black soul Rhythms AND one of her RL influences:

“ It has always been my focus to build & promote an internet radio station using SL. SugarHill is secondary... SugarHill gives me the space to showcase art) and a place to hold events for BSR Radio. Cathy Hughes is a RL influence of mine !!! She busted her ass to get her RL radio station off the ground .... now she is a multi millionaire!!

Gee...would you look at that…DJ Dibou is just a fabulous person all around. Her creativity, style and leadership qualities are something to truly be marveled at…THIS IS WHY I MAKE IT A POINT TO TUNE IN to her show on Tuesday evenings from 8-10 EST where she showcases Neosoul, News from Nisa (can’t wait to do my Nisa story) AND new music from new artists. DJ Dibou also plays a wide variety of other artists and lemme tell you the night is always filled many pleasures…Stay tuned next week for my review on some of the new artists played during DJ Dibou’s set… MY top two reasons for enjoying and looking forward to DJ Dibou IS 1) I am always made to feel at home and 2) I am ALWAYS able to relax , unwind and have a good time... because that is just the way DJ Dibou's sets are :)…ttys guys!
